Asthma grant awarded to Prescott-Joseph Center and W. Oakland Asthma Coalition

California Endowment awarded the West Oakland Asthma Coalition and Prescott-Joseph Center a $65,000 grant for 18 months to continue the asthma education program.

Current data from our work in West Oakland schools indicates that the incidence of asthma in school children in West Oakland is 18-20%. The adult incidence is higher, but it is difficult to get an accurate assessment.

Prescott-Joseph Center for Community Enhancement and the West Oakland Asthma Coalition are committed to reeducing or eliminating the pervasive asthma problem in West Oakland. This grant will help us get there. Thank you, CAawment!

Voter Registration in West Oakland

Voter registration is one of our ongoing projects at the WOCC. W. Burns, President of the WOCC, will be talking to students of the East Bay Conservation Corp., May 9, at 9am about registering and participating in voting. Since WOCC has gotten involved in getting out the vote in West Oakland by registering over 3500 new voters in 2004 and encouraging use of the absentee ballot there has been a remarkable improvement in voters exercising their right to vote in West Oakland.
