HEArts Class, Art is Healing

HEArts teacher Healing Art Class
Art is healing.
Based on this premise, Carmen Reyes Edstrom, director of the Healing Art Center at Prescott-Joseph, designed a program to help down trodden women. This program just ended in December with a class of 6 women enrolled from the SISTER Program, Johnnie Lewis, Executive Director.  This program provides support for women with substance abuse and victims of domestic violence.  Women enter the program for a period of time, living in communal housing, working and studying together.
Carmen’s program consisted of paintings, mask making, and plate painting.  The artwork created by the students under Carmen’s careful tutorage produced discovery of self.  For most students it revealed some artistic talent, restored self-pride and confidence. “My God,” said Johnnie Lewis, “my women have been transformed.”  She quickly asked us to take on more of her clients and the first six want to continue.  What a happy dilemma pro us; all we have to do is find the space and funds for more classes.
