Partnership and Collaborative News: July 2005

The West Oakland Community Collaborative has finished the first year of supporting the Chappell-Hayes Youth and Family Center. The Collaborative provides support for youth and families that have basic needs such as food, housing, clothing, drug therapy. After school programs , job training and jobs. Sharon Robinson, coordinator for the Collaborative and Johnnie Lewis, Executive Director of The SISTER Project play major roles in this project.

I Have a Dream, Inc., a non-profit organization, that provides support for students that they have followed since the 3rd grade at Prescott Elementary Scholl and will be seniors next fall at McClymonds High School will run their summer program of college prep including writing classes, Math tutoring, study skills, time and money management and computer, at Prescott-Joseph Center. They will occupy two offices here and take advantage of the computer lab and space for classes. This program, which is a national program, not only provides academic support but helps students financially and plan to follow their original students through college.

Environmental Sciences Institute, an organization that is heavily involved with the West Oakland food and nutrition programs, has been joined by H.O.P.E., Helping Oakland People Eat, non-profit promoting good nutrition and is especially interested in youth programs.
